Bhimtal is a small town situated at 3 km from Sattal, at an altitude of 1375 m above the sea level. This town is mainly known for its Bhimtal Lake, which has a small island in its centre. The town has derived its name from the legendary Bhima of the Mahabharata who is said to have visited this place during his exile period. This town is also considered to be older than Nainital and to have remained a part of ancient silk route of China. It also has an old mountain route that goes from Kathgodam to Kumaon, up to Nepal and Tibet. For not being commercialized as Nainital, the place still resists its natural charm and largely spread farmhouses and orchards of citrus laden fruits is a common sight seen here. Its Folk Culture Museum that houses a collection of artefacts from surrounding hill regions is also quite popular amongst the tourists.
