Durga Temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is one of the popular temples, which is also known as the monkey temple. Constructed during 18th century by a Bengali Maharani, the temple possesses North Indian or Nagara style of architecture.Housing a multi-tiered shikhara, the temple is located on a rectangular tank, which is often called as the Durga Kund.According to the legend, the idol in the temple is not made by man but appeared on its own. It is believed that Goddess Durga has protected this place for many centuries and the holy city from the South.The temple is known with the name of monkey temple as tourists can spot number of monkeys in the vicinity of the temple area. The temple during the celebrations of Navratri and other auspicious occasions sees a huge number of devotees.Another prominent location named Durga Ghat is located in close vicinity of the temple. Being one of the well known ghats in Varanasi, Durga Ghat was built by a saintly person, Narayana Diksit in 1772. The ghat also houses a small temple dedicated to Kharva Narsimha.
