The Shakti Peeth of Deoband is situated on the Saharanpur-Muzaffarnagar Highway, in the town of Deoband. The area of Deoband is closely associated with Goddess Durga, as it is said that Goddess Durga used to reside in the forests that existed here in earlier times. Due to this reason, these forests were known as 'Devi Van', which later came to be known as Deoband. To the east of this town, lies an ancient lake called Devi Kund. According to legend, Devi Durga killed the Maha Asur Durg, at this kund itself. The temple of Bala Sundari also exists near this kund, which was built in the memory of this incident. Interiors of this temple comprise a naked statue of Goddess Durga, along with several ancient inscriptions engraved on its doors and walls. The festival of Chaitra Shukla Chaturdasi is celebrated at this temple, durig which devotees take a dip in the holy water of Devi Kund.
