Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is one of the prime institutions established in this country. It is located 15 km west of the city on the Grand Trunk Road. The total area covered by its campus is close to 420 hectares. The main aim of the institute is to provide the students with significant education and leadership in technological innovation for the industrial growth of the country. This institute also focuses on conducting original research of the highest standards.This institute started in a rented building of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in 1959, with just 100 students and a very small faculty. The institute is built on a land, which was gifted by the Uttar Pradesh government in the year 1960. The institute now has over 2000 undergraduate and 1000 post graduate students, around 300 faculty and 900 supporting staff. The campus reflects the rich cultural diversity of India
