Ratnadurg Fort is located in the town of Ratnagiri in Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra. Built by the Bahamanis in the 16th century, this fort later became the property of the Adil Shahis. The fort, situated at a distance of 4 km from the town center, is one of the chief attractions of Ratnagiri.In 1670, after several decades of Muslim rule, Chhatrapati Shivaji annexed Ratnadurg Fort into the Maratha Empire. Later, the fort was handed over to Aangre, who lost it to the Peshva in 1753. The British captured the fort from the Peshva in the year 1818.The horse-shoe shaped Ratnadurg Fort is situated on a vast area of 120 acres, with an approximate length of 1300 m and width of 1000 m. Ratnadurg Fort is also known by the name Bhagawati Durga Fort, as it houses a shrine of Goddess Durga. The fort also has shrines to Lord Hanuman and Lord Ganesha.Ratnadurg Fort has many bastions, some of which are Ganesha, Markya, Baskya, Vetal, Khamkya Rede, Vagha, etc. The fort is divided in to three parts - upper fort or Balekilla, the middle Peth Fort and the Parkot. Among these, Peth Fort is in ruins and the Parkot, the largest one, accomodates the Ratnagiri Light House.
