Chain Tree
Chain Tree, a prominent excursion destination, is a chained ficus tree situated about 15 km from Kalpetta. The mountain terrain leading to Wayanad was discovered by a British engineer with the help of a tribal guide, Karinthandan. The British engineer killed this guide so that he could take all the credit of finding this place. It is believed that the soul of the murdered guide used to haunt this place. According to local lore, the spirit was chained by a priest to the tree, thereby earning the place the name Chain Tree. Tourists must beware of the many monkeys passing through the roadside that lead to Vythiri from this Chain Tree.
