Karumadi Kuttan
Karumadi, located at a distance of 3 km from Alleppey is one of the most popular villages in Kerala. Frequently visited by large number of visitors, this village is famous for the large black granite statue of Lord Buddha. This black granite statue is popularly known as Karumadi Kuttan. Serving as a reminder of Buddhist remnant, this statue belongs to the period when Buddhism was at its peak during 9th and 10th century. A shrine has been constructed around this statue, so as to protect it. The statue of Lord Buddha present here is broken into half. According to the legend, it is believed that an elephant charged towards this statue and broke it into half. Nowadays, Hinduism is the most popular religion in this village, however that does not change the beauty of this statue of Lord Buddha.
