Island of Pathiramanal in the Alappuzha District of Kerala is quite popular among the ornithologists. The name of the island is derived from the word Pathiramanal' which means sands of night. It is situated in the middle of the Vembanad Lake and is inhabited by pintail duck, night heron, common teal, cormorant, darter and Indian shag. The purple-heron, gull, tern, large egret, cattle egret, little egret and pheasant tailed jacanas are some of the other prominent birds seen on the island. The island can be reached by backwater cruises, motor boats and speed boats.
