Pazhayapalli St Mary's Old Church, one of the oldest churches in India, has been named after Mother Mary. The church was constructed in 1449 in Kanjirappally using wood and stone. It is believed to have been renovated three to four times, but the main altar remains the same since its inception. This old church is built on the land donated by Sri Veerakerala Perumal, the erstwhile King of Thekkemcore and nephew of Cheraman Perumal.
