Shalimar Garden

Shalimar Garden was constructed in 1616 by Emperor Jehangir for his wife Nur Jahan. Later during the reign of Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, between 1628 and 1658, a second garden, known as Faiz Baksh, was added to it.Sprawling over an area of approximately 539 m by 182 m, the Shalimar Garden is also known as the garden of love. This garden has four terraces, rising one above the other. At one point of time, the fourth terrace of this garden was especially reserved for royal ladies. In addition, there is a canal located inside the garden, which is lined with polished stones running through the centre of the garden. It is through this canal that water is supplied to the garden from Harwan. For the Mughal Emperor and royal ladies of the court, top terrace of the garden was reserved, which is the most beautiful of all the terraces. This terrace houses a tank, which has a black stone pavilion located in its middle. One of the major attractions of this garden includes a light and sound show, which is organised every evening, during the months from May to October.
