Hazratbal Mosque is located at a distance of 25 km from the Bagdam district. Facing the beautiful Nishat Bagh, the mosque is situated on the western banks of Dal Lake.This mosque is an epitome of love and respect of Muslims for Prophet Mohammad. One of the most revered Muslim shrines, this mosque offers beautiful view of the lake and the mountain Afar. This shrine houses Moi-e-Muqqadus, which are the preserved sacred hair of Prophet Mohammad. The hair are displayed to public only on religious occasions.Assar-e-Sharief, Madinat-us-Sani and Dargah Sharif are some of the other names by which this mosque is popular among visitors. Dating back to as early as seventeenth century, the construction of Hazratbal mosque was completed in 1979.A pleasure house, known as Ishrat Mahal along with the garden was constructed by Sadiq Khan, Subedar of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, at the site of mosque in 1623. However, in 1634, when Shah Jahan visited this site, he ordered the conversion of the palace into a prayer house.Later in 1699, during the reign of Emperor Aurangzeb, Moi-e-Muqqadus arrived in Kashmir. Initially, Moi-e-Muqqadus was placed in the shrine of Naqashbad Sahib, which is situated in the centre of the city. However, owing to the huge rush of visitors to see the Moi-e-Muqqadus, made the place appear quite small. As a result of this, it was decided that Moi-e-Muqqadus will be shifted to Hazratbal, which was known as Sadiqabad at that time.The Hazratbal Mosque, a beautiful structure, is made of white marble. The construction work on this mosque was started in 1968 by the Muslim Auqaf Trust, which was headed by Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah. It took around eleven years for the construction of this mosque, which was completed in 1979. One of the most famous attractions of this mosque is that it is the only domed mosque, which is located in Srinagar.
