Gulmarg is the most popular sightseeing destination situated in the district of Baramula. It is situated at 57 km west of Srinagar, near the Indo-Pakistan border. Earlier, the place was known as Gaurimarg, but was renamed to Gulmarg by the Sultan Yusuf Shah, in the 16th century. Its name suggests lsquo;a valley of flowersrsquo;, which is significant with its scenic sites and wide variety of flora species. Apart from the species of flowers, it is also known for its trekking routes and snowy winters.Gulmarg has many scenic spots, of which the most popular one is its golf course. This golf course is said to be the highest green golf course of Asia. Its layout includes land slopes and inclines along its entire area, with 72 pars. This golf course was started by the Britishers in 1904. Presently, the management of this golf course is under the hands of Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation.
