Mani Lhakhang Stupa is situated in the town of Mcleodganj and was built under the instructions of Third Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche. The monument was established in 2001 and is considered to be a holy place of Buddhists. Also known as the Prayer Wheels Stupa, Mani Lhakhang Stupa was one of the five stupas built in the town to ward off threats and natural calamities. After the earthquake in 1986, five such small stupas were constructed by Dalai Lama. The Mani Lhakhang Stupa is visited by both the followers and tourists as well. Visitors can spin the long row of prayer wheels for good luck. A huge gold plated Buddha statue sits in the lotus position inside the sanctum. One can also visit this stupa during the evening prayer time when hymns are sung by the monks accompanied with musical instruments.Other tourist attractions close to this place are the Bhagsunath Temple and Falls, Tsuglag khang, Namgyal Monastery and the St John's Church, all at walk able distances. The best time to visit would be during the birthday celebrations of HH Dalai Lama in July. Located in the city centre itself, the best way to reach Mani Lhakhang Stupa is by walking.
