Somnath Temple

Somnath Temple is situated close to Chorwad and was originally built by Somraj (the moon god) using pure gold. This temple was rebuilt by Ravana (the demon king) in silver and by Lord Krishna in wood. The temple was built again in the 10th century by King Bhimdeva Solanki using stone. This temple was raided by Mahmud Ghazni in 1024 AD and all the jewels and gold in the temple was taken away by him. Somnath Temple was again destroyed in 1706 AD by the Mughal ruler, Aurangzeb. However, it was rebuilt for the seventh time in 1950 with the support of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This temple is one of the twelve Lord Shiva shrines, which is known as Jyotirlinga and is thronged by tourists year-round.
