Fort Aguada was built in the early 16th century, during the time of the Portuguese rule in Goa. The fort was constructed with an aim to protect Goa from the attacks of neighbouring kingdoms. The fort is a fine example of colonial architecture. The fort has a citadel, which has an orbicular lighthouse tower, raised in 1864. Presently, the fort has been turned into a central jail and some sections of the fort lie in ruins.
